Microspace Communications Helps
WCPE Classical Radio Expand Market Reach with VELOCITY® Satellite
Solution
Market
Leader to Provide Content to 75 Sites
Raleigh, NC (Sept. 27, 2004) –Microspace
Communications
Corporation (Microspace), the leading provider of point-to-multipoint
satellite services, today announced
a multi-year
agreement with WCPE Radio to deliver programming via its
VELOCITY® satellite system. The pact covers approximately
75
satellite and Internet broadcasting sites, including 20
affiliate
radio stations reaching more than 200,000 listeners nationwide.
Based in Wake Forest, NC, WCPE is a non-commercial,
independent,
listener-supported station dedicated to excellence in classical
music
broadcasting.
Besides individual subscribers, listeners
include
radio
stations at educational institutions which often broadcast
WCPE’s content during summer months
and
off-hours.
The station first explored satellite delivery six
years
ago with the intent to deliver content to the cable community.
Moving
to the VELOCITY service will help WCPE to achieve
their
core business objective of growing their network,
according
to General Manager Deborah Proctor.
“More than twenty percent of WCPE’s radio listeners
use the Internet, cable, home satellite or other methods
to listen to our classical music,” said Proctor. “We
came
to
Microspace as we moved to digital delivery because their
VELOCITY service offered greater reach, reliability
and
cost
efficiencies than our traditional analog platform. More importantly,
satellite service is vital to our being
able
to
reach listeners outside of the local area and will help us
more quickly grow our audience than we would have
been
able
to through other means.”
Microspace relays WCPE's programming for
Internet
audio streaming, and enables listeners to pick up the signal
via
compact,
36-inch
satellite dishes, a significant advantage over other carriers
requiring larger, more expensive ground
equipment.
VELOCITY
delivers WCPE’s programming from
its
studio
in North Carolina to sites in Seattle and Florida that
encode
the streams for the Internet.
“We’re pleased that WCPE chose VELOCITY to provide
affordable, high-quality delivery of its classical music
programming,” said Joe Amor, Microspace vice president
and general manager. “It provides the versatility in
service
features to meet the needs of their current audience, and
to support future growth as they work to broaden both
program
offerings and their listening base.”
